Abstract
Digital Libraries (DLs) are nowadays conceived as integrated tools promoting knowledge creation and consumption. They are moving far from the connotation of the term library' to become a co-operative environment supporting all the actors involved in the whole process of knowledge creation, management, exchange, etc. Due to the different application contexts in which these systems have to be applied  and their demanding requirements, novel and flexible strategies for developing, creating, and maintaining DLs are needed.
